Celiac Sprue Association of Greater Chicago, Chicago Area Restaurant Suggestions

Please note that you should always check ingredients every time you eat at a restaurant, and you should not make any assumptions about the safety of food at these restaurants simply because they were recommended by another person, who may not be as sensitive as you may be towards gluten. Also be aware that management, chefs, and wait staff can change at any restaurant, any one of which can change the menu and/or their willingness to work with you on gluten-free choices. For this reason it is a good idea, whenever possible, to call ahead. Members feel that these restaurants were particularly friendly and cooperative toward their special needs.

Of course, don't plan on going to most of these restaurants on a Friday or Saturday night between 7:00 PM and 9:00 PM and expect them to scrub the grill for you! And if you had a good gluten-free experience, a few words of praise and a generous tip will never be amiss.

Reviews and Map
Owner Ray Garcia is very accommodating. When I explained my needs, he spent quite a bit of time on the phone with me. He recommended carne asada, bistek ranchero and carne con chile especial as his staff prepares them from scratch so he can vouch for the ingredients. Mr. Garcia was alert enough to realize that their corn tortillas and tortilla chips might be contaminated by wheat flour in the factory, so he recommended avoiding those. He requested more information so if other celiacs dine there in future he will know what he can safely offer. Well-established family-owned restaurant with a big menu, competitive prices, excellent service. They do not take reservations. On weekends there is always a line out the door at dinnertime, but I have never regretted the wait.

They also have locations in Atlanta, Dallas, Houston and (later this year) Beverly Hills. Plus 4 locations in Brazil, which is where they started. It turns out that with a small handful of foods, this restaurant is, in fact, entirely GF without changing a thing. The only foods I could not eat were the traditional bread (which is only on the buffet and not served to the table) and the tabouleh.

They use only fresh meat, so you can have a steak (not the filet which is wrapped in bacon) made plain. They can clean the grill & use a clean utensil for your steak. Tell them not to put seasoning or "go juice" which is their butter mixture (not GF) on it. You can get a plain baked potato or a plain baked sweet potato and a salad minus croutons. We usually bring our own dressing.

I just have to rave about a dining experience we had here. I had called a few days before to make sure they could accommodate us. I spoke to a chef who assured me they would do everything possible to prepare a great gluten free meal with no cross contamination. He said they felt more comfortable if we brought our own salad dressing.

The chef personally served her meal and came out during it to make sure she enjoyed it. It was a wonderful experience and really made my daughter feel good.

They do not normally use soy sauce in any dishes and all the other sauces were safe when I last checked around Jan 1997. Cook is very cooperative when not busy.
